Type of data stored, purpose and legal basis, deletion time limits
Handling of personal data
Personal data is information that can be used to identify a natural person, i.e. information that makes individuals identifiable. This especially includes names, email addresses, student ID numbers or telephone numbers. However, personal data also includes data about preferences, hobbies, memberships or information about websites that the person has visited.

Goethe University Frankfurt only collects, uses and discloses personal data if this is permitted by law or if the user has consented to the collection of their data.

The use of students’ personal data for the purpose of their studies is predominantly based on the applicable Hessian Higher Education Act in conjunction with the applicable Hessian Ordinance on University Admissions and thus relates to EU GDPR Article 6 (1) c).

The data of Goethe University Frankfurt employees for the purpose of staff administration, teaching, research and examinations is collected and processed on the basis of the Hessian Higher Education Act, the Hessian Ordinance on University Admissions, the Collective Agreement of Goethe University Frankfurt as well as civil service and employment law.

Access data/server log files
When accessing the pages of this web server, the following data is generally stored in the server log files:

  • IP address

  • Date and time

  • Type of client browser

  • URL of the page accessed

If applicable, the error message for the error that occurred
If applicable, the requesting provider
This data is used exclusively for the purpose of monitoring functionality and security and for correcting errors. This use is based on EU GDPR Article 6 (1) e) as well as Section 3 and Sections 8-11 Act on the Protection of Electronic Administration in Hesse (HITSiG). All log files are automatically deleted at the latest after 7 days. In the event of security breaches, the data can be stored for up to 90 days (Section 14 Act on the Protection of Electronic Administration in Hesse (HITSiG)).

Contacting the university
When contacting members of Goethe University Frankfurt (e.g. via contact form or email), your details will be stored for the purpose of processing your request and for any questions that might subsequently arise. After your request has been processed or after the legal obligation or the service used has been fulfilled, the data will be deleted, unless the retention of the data is necessary to exercise the legitimate interests of Goethe University Frankfurt or due to a legal requirement (e.g. law, ordinance, statutes of Goethe University Frankfurt, etc.).

Cookies
Cookies are small files that make it possible to store specific, device-related information on your access device (PC, smartphone, etc.). They serve to make websites more user-friendly (e.g. saving of login data). You can influence the use of cookies. Most browsers have an option for restricting the storage of cookies or for blocking them completely. However, it should be noted that use and especially user comfort might be restricted if cookies are disabled. Cookies are essential for using password-protected pages. They serve to verify access authorization and are deleted at the end of the session.

Access-protected websites and user-based services
In addition to the data mentioned above, the user name or an identifier is also collected for authorization control of data access. This data is deleted or anonymized at the latest after 7 days, unless the retention of the data is necessary to exercise the legitimate interests of Goethe University Frankfurt or due to a legal requirement (e.g. law, ordinance, statutes of Goethe University Frankfurt, etc.).

For all services that do not fall under these provisions, explicit declarations of consent are obtained. Data is deleted in accordance with the requirements of the service used. The deletion time limit is clearly defined as part of the record of processing activities. The legal basis for this is EU GDPR Article 6 (1) a).

Integration of third-party services
Third-party content (such as YouTube videos, Google Maps material, RSS feeds, graphics, etc.) from other websites is integrated into some of the pages of this website. This is always conditional on the providers of this content (hereinafter referred to as “third-party providers”) recognizing your IP address, as without the IP address third-party providers would be unable to send content to your browser. The IP address is therefore required for displaying this content. We endeavor to use only content whose respective providers use the IP address solely to deliver content. However, we have no influence on any further use of your data (e.g. if third-party providers store your IP address for statistical purposes).

Ad tracking
In cooperation with the company VariFast GmbH and using the Adition AG ad server, advertising banners are placed on some of Goethe University Frankfurt’s web pages. This also involves the use of cookies. These are exclusively session and temporary cookies that serve to measure the number of readers/visitors statistically and to limit the number of times that advertising material is delivered. Only technical data, but no identifying data, is collected. All data analyses are anonymous and purely statistical.

In accordance with their contractual obligation toward Goethe University Frankfurt, VariFast GmbH and Adition AG comply with all relevant data protection provisions, in particular those of the German Telemedia Act and the Federal Data Protection Act.

Clicking on the following link will stop the collection of anonymized data by our advertising partners. In this case, Adition replaces the current cookie with a new opt-out cookie. This opt-out cookie deletes the information stored so far and prevents any further collection of anonymized information. If this opt-out cookie is deleted, Adition can no longer detect that an opt-out has taken place. In this case, the opt-out process must be repeated.

Our website uses Piwik/Matomo, a web analytics service. Matomo uses cookies, text files stored on your computer that enable us to analyze the use of the website. For this purpose, the usage information generated by the cookie (including your shortened IP address) is transmitted to our server and stored for the purpose of analyzing usage, which serves to optimize the website.
