Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI)
At the Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) Cluster of Excellence, researchers from Giessen, Frankfurt, and Bad Nauheim are working together to better understand heart and lung diseases.
Together, they are investigating how the heart, lungs, and blood vessels develop, function, and change in the presence of disease. Their goal: to find new ways to detect heart and lung diseases earlier and treat them more effectively.
The research network has been making important contributions to medicine since 2006. In January 2026, the Cluster of Excellence entered a new funding phase: The German Research Foundation (DFG) is supporting the second funding phase for another seven years.
Diseases of the cardiovascular system are often accompanied by lung diseases. Globally, they are the leading causes of death. The goal of the Cardio-Pulmonary Institute Cluster of Excellence is to understand the molecular biological processes underlying the functioning of these organs and their failure in disease states. To this end, CPI researchers are developing model systems and combining the results with data from patient studies to identify new therapeutic approaches.
