Corn from the U.S., rice from Pakistan, beans from Kenya, and soybeans and steaks from Argentina—when it comes to agricultural products, consumers have a very international choice. Currently, around 50 % of the farmland that Germany relies on for its food supply are located outside its borders, where the cultivation of food and animal feed often has very negative impacts on the environment. But food production within Germany isn’t automatically sustainable either. Only a small portion of these products are produced in ways that protect soil, biodiversity, water, and the climate. What does this mean for the environment and the future—and is there another way? Are new, regional forms of agriculture and consumption possible? How do people elsewhere in the world eat, and what does your personal diet mean for the planet? At the booth, scientists will provide an informative and engaging insight into this complex topic.
